According to many experts, identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes meaning more and more of us will fall victim to this modern day type of theft. With so much of our information out there in the public realm, it is more important than ever to minimize the amount of personal information unauthorized people have access to in order to keep your identity safe.

You should get credit reports from all three credit bureaus since each report might contain slightly different information. You want to keep an eye out for accounts you don't use, that you don't recognize or for an increased number of inquiries on your credit reports.

Finally, there are several services that provide identity theft monitoring, where they will monitor your credit report and other information and let you know each month if there were any changes. This can be a great way to put your identity theft protection on autopilot. That way, you can rest assured that if anything does happen, you'll be aware of it soon enough to take the appropriate steps to minimize the damage.
