Identity Theft Prevention Measures
Identity theft, one of the most insidious forms of white-collar crime, is a federal crime under the Identity Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act. It occurs when charlatans steal your personal and/or financial information to use your credit accounts, tap your bank accounts, get new credit in your name, file fraudulent tax returns, get cell phones in your name, access your insurance benefits, and so on. When someone steals your personal and financial information, your life may become a living hell, particularly if you don't realize what has happened right away and the imposter has siphoned off funds using your name. This makes adopting strategies for identity theft prevention all the more...

There’s No Humor In Identity Theft
We’ve all seen those credit card commercials on television advertising ways to keep your identity safe. They involve innocent victims of identity theft talking in the voices of the criminals who stole their identities. One includes a couple of old ladies sitting on a sofa surrounded by gaudy decorations involving flowers and doilies. While this doesn’t sound so unusual, the ladies are speaking in the voices of two men who have stolen their credit cards, and possibly their identities, and purchased motorcycles. Little old ladies with masculine voices talking about fast motorcycles? Hilarious! However, in real life, there’s no humor in identity theft. When you’re the victim of identity...

Credit cards and identity theft

Author:
Gunnar Berglund

As more and more Americans become reliant on credit cards in their daily life, identity theft is growing. Identity theft is when someone uses your personal information without permission. They can obtain credit or use your existing credit to put you in a serious financial crisis. Prepaid credit cards may be an option for someone who wants to avoid identity theft.
Prepaid credit cards are a credit card that you add a certain amount of money to. These cards do not have a set limit, but rather your spending is based on how much money you put on the card. The idea is that you can use the card anywhere credit cards are excepted, but without the worries of debt. You do not get charged interest charges and can not exceed your spending limit. These cards are not tied to a bank account and you do not get monthly bills. This makes prepaid credit cards virtually unworthy an identity thief's time. If you are approached by someone trying to steal your identity you can feel protected with your prepaid credit card. Most of the time these thieves try to get your credit card number so they can then use it to make purchases. Even if they do get your credit card number they still can only use the amount of money you have on the card. They can not go on a crazy spending spree and since the card is not attached to any bank accounts, they can not access your other financial information. This protection doesn't come with debit cards or regular credit cards.
Using prepaid credit cards everyday or just for occasions, like traveling, when you could be more prone to identity theft is an overall good idea. Many thief's are looking for an easy target, but if you play it smart you won't be that target.

Five Types of Identity Theft
By now, every adult should know that identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America. It has become an epidemic, leaving everyone at risk, including children, adults, the elderly, those with good credit, bad credit, or no credit. And, to make matters worse, most people do not know if their identity has been stolen. The biggest misconception is that identity theft only affects or involves your credit. If you, too, believe that identity theft only affects or involves your credit, then you might want to keep reading. In addition to credit related identity theft, there are at least four other categories of identity theft that will not necessarily affect your credit, but can ruin your life. The following are real life stories. 1. Character identity theft. Someone impersonates you and commits a crime in your name resulting in warrants issued in your name, arrests made, and time spent in jail. Donna has been impersonated by her sister for many years. Unfortunately for Donna, her sister has an extensive criminal record. In order to clear her name, Donna has had to hire an attorney. She has been told that once your name is associated with a crime, it can never come off. Someone with a criminal record stole Harry’s wallet. Unbeknownst to Harry, the thief then committed several crimes in Harry’s name. Unfortunately, this criminal activity was entered into the database of a background check company that provides data to potential employers. Harry lost his job and has been unable to find work because of the false information. Three years ago, Jane’s purse was stolen by someone she knew. The identity thief bought a car with Jane’s ID and committed other crimes in Jane’s name (writing bad checks and burglary). No one in law enforcement believes...
